1. Payment Methods in Turkey and Apple Pay Limitations
While all kinds of credit cards are widely common and accepted across Turkey, Apple pay is currently not supported in Turkey. If you are using Apple Pay in your own country make sure to bring a physical credit or debit card or have cash. Mobile payments via QR codes are very popular in Turkey but it might not be available for foreign cardholders. So, bringing extra cash would be beneficial in case of anything.
2. Don’t Forget a Travel Adapter for Your Charger
Turkey uses European Style Plugs which is Type C with a standard voltage of 220V. I f you are traveling from the UK, Ukraine and Portugal, or other countries that use different plug types such as Type G in the UK you will need an adapter to convert your plug to the convenient one.
3. Tipping Culture in Turkey: Kindness, Not Obligation
Tipping known as Bahşiş in Turkish is a part of Turkish culture though it is not mandatory. In restaurants, cafes or after services like taxi rides it is a gesture of kindness to leave around 10% of the service if you are satisfied. Turkey can be seen as the symbol of hospitality only thanking to the stuff with a smiling face is even enough. But don’t forget staff always appreciate this gesture, but you don’t have to tip.
4. How to Use Public Transportation Effectively
İzmir has an affordable and easy public transportation system, including metro, buses, ferries and trams. To use it you can download an İzmirim Kart app. This app allows you to use a digital card to pay all fares directly from your phone and you don’t need to buy a physical ticket. Just scan your app at gates or on buses and go. It is very cost-effective.
If you don’t have enough time to download the application and arrange your transportation you can also use one of your credit card with contactless payment with an ease. Please note that If you choose to pay with contactless credit card the amount is going to be 10% percent higher than the payment with the application.
5. Pharmacies Are Closed on Sundays
All Pharmacies in Türkiye are open from Monday to Saturday but closed on Sundays. You can easily look for the red “E” signs across Türkiye to spot pharmacies. On Sundays, national holidays and right after 19:00 PM which is their daily closing hour you should find the nearest Nöbetçi Ezcane (on-duty pharmacy). 6. Tap Water Is Not For Drinking
Unlike in some European countries, drinking tap water is not common in Türkiye. Tap water contains metals, toxic and chemical substances that are deleterious to health. It is safe for brushing your teeth and washing you face but for hydration, it is a big no. Bottled water is recommended and readily available everywhere.
7. Stray Cats and Dogs
You will notice many cats and dogs strolling around İzmir. They are not only stray animals, these animals are also one of the significant part of the city’s soul. Locals generally feed and care them by putting two small bowls next to their doorstep for both their hydration and nutrition. Also it is very normal to see them lying in cafe’s chair or napping on sidewalks. But do not worry about their freedom, municipalities ensure they are vaccinated and tagged. We can encourage you to treat them with kindness, all they need is some affection.
8. Don’t Forget To Bring Your Sunscreen
Turkey and especially İzmir is very famous for its sunshine. Even in April or October, the sun can be strong. So it will be better for you to protect your skin, pack you sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. Besides you should bring comfortable and breathable clothes for warm days and a light jacket for cooler evenings particularly if you are coming in spring or autumn. Sudden temperature drops or rain are very common .Weather can change quickly in spring and autumn.
9. Turkey Has National Holidays With Limited Services
On national and religious holidays, many shops, restaurants and government offices may be closed or have limited hours. Here are the list of official holidays in Turkey:
- January 1: New Year’s Day
- April 23: National Sovereignty and Children’s Day
- May 1: Labor and Solidarity Day
- May 19: Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day
- July 15: Democracy and National Unity Day
- August 30: Victory Day
- October 29: Republic Day
- Eid al-Fitr (Ramazan Bayramı): Date varies (3 days)
- Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayramı): Date varies (4 days)
It is better to check for the local calendar each year. Islamic holidays shift based on the lunar calendar. During these days it would be better to make reservations in advance for restaurants or any touristic plans, as locals frequently travel or dine out during national celebrations.
